Spelling

CUSP Spelling has been carefully designed with evidence at its core—giving teachers the confidence to deliver high-impact lessons and helping pupils develop a deep, lasting understanding of the English spelling system.

Built as a cumulative curriculum, it gives you the flexibility to move forwards and backwards depending on your pupils’ needs. Fully resourced for both teachers and pupils, CUSP Spelling promotes consistency across your school while supporting you with the strong subject knowledge needed to teach the National Curriculum with clarity and confidence.

Rather than relying on memorising complex “rules”, CUSP Spelling takes a balanced, meaningful approach. It connects phonics, vocabulary, pattern-seeking and reasoning—helping pupils understand how spelling works, not just remember it. Each unit focuses on key spelling concepts (not rules), recognising that English is full of patterns and exceptions. Pupils build on their phonics knowledge to explore, question and apply spelling with increasing independence.

Going beyond statutory requirements, CUSP Spelling adopts a Curriculum Plus approach. Alongside National Curriculum content, pupils explore etymology and morphology, tackle common misconceptions, and develop skills in self-correction and reasoning. The result? Learners who are not only accurate spellers, but thoughtful, independent writers who can identify and improve their own work.

The carefully sequenced long-term plan blends essential knowledge with key disciplinary skills—such as reasoning, transfer and error correction. Concepts are revisited and strengthened over time, ensuring learning is embedded in long-term memory and truly mastered.
