EARLY FOUNDATIONS
A strong early years curriculum lays the foundation for lifelong learning. The CUSP Early Foundations Curriculum is carefully designed around three interconnected pillars that help children build knowledge, develop language, and apply their learning through meaningful experiences. The three pillars of the CUSP Early Foundations Curriculum are:
Foundational Knowledge
At the heart of the curriculum is a clear and progressive framework of Foundational Knowledge, outlining exactly what children need to know and be able to do across each area of learning. This knowledge is brought to life through Giant Knowledge Notes; engaging visual prompts that help children recall, discuss, and deepen their understanding of key concepts. These notes are displayed within the learning environment, encouraging children to revisit learning independently and apply new vocabulary during both guided and child-led activities.
Structured Storytimes
Stories are a powerful vehicle for learning. Through Structured Storytime, high-quality literature is carefully selected to introduce and reinforce the concepts within the Foundational Knowledge framework.
Children benefit from:
- Explicit teaching of rich, ambitious vocabulary
- Interactive storytelling through expressive reading, drama, and oracy activities
- Thought-provoking “Thinking Hard” tasks that encourage deeper comprehension and critical thinking
To extend learning beyond the story session, Giant Story Notes are placed alongside books within the provision, enabling children to engage with stories independently and strengthen their understanding through play and exploration.
Opportunities and Experiences
Learning becomes truly meaningful when children can apply it in real and engaging contexts. Our curriculum includes carefully planned Opportunities and Experiences that span all areas of learning and development.
These experiences provide children with opportunities to:
- Explore and practise newly taught concepts
- Develop communication and language skills
- Engage in shared and guided writing
- Strengthen physical development
- Build confidence through purposeful play and exploration
Inspiring Curious, Confident Learners
By combining clear knowledge progression, the power of storytelling, and rich hands-on experiences, the CUSP Early Foundations Curriculum creates an environment where children can thrive. Every aspect of the curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity, develop language, and support children in becoming confident, capable learners.
